Remote Desktop Services, formerly known as Terminal Services, is one of the components of Microsoft Windows (both server and client versions) that allows a user to access applications and data on a remote computer over a network, using the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP). Terminal Services is Microsoft's implementation of thin-client terminal server computing, where Windows applications, or even the entire desktop of the computer running terminal services, are made accessible to a remote client machine. The client can either be a fully-fledged computer, running any operating system as long as the terminal services protocol is supported, or a barebone machine powerful enough to support the protocol (such as Windows FLP). With terminal services, only the user interface of an application is presented at the client. Any input to it is redirected over the network to the server, where all application execution takes place
Looking for a way to remote control your Windows 2000 Server without actually sitting in front of it? If you have one of the Server editions of Windows then you're in luck. You can use Terminal Services which works quite well and it's free!
Terminal Services runs in two modes:
Remote Administration
Application Server Mode
Terminal Services lets administrators install, configure, manage and maintain applications centrally on a few servers. This is usually much faster and easier to do than deploying applications on hundreds or thousands of desktop machines at different sites across an enterprise. And by making the job of the administrator easier, companies also save money on IT support costs for their information systems infrastructure. Furthermore, centrally-deployed applications are usually easier to maintain (for example, patching and upgrading) and simpler to troubleshoot when things go wrong. As a result, downtime is reduced, users are more productive, and business booms along.
remote desktop services in known as Terminal Services, its component of MS window. its available for both server and client , it allow user to control some pc from remote place on network with help of Remote Desktop Protocol.

Terminal services can allow remote computers to run desktops and applications on a server as though it is running locally. This is similar to the functionality provided by X on UNIX and Linux platforms. Keystrokes and mouse action information is sent from the client to the server over the network and visual display information is sent back to the client from the server. Terminal services offer the following advantages:
Since the computing is done on the server side, the terminal computer can be an older PC that is not powerful and it does not even require a hard drive.
Administration of applications is easier since they are run on the server only.
Users on the client computers cannot accidently misconfigure their computers, since there is virtually nothing to configure
